I Made A Christmas Card in Adobe InDesign

Since Christmas is just around the corner I thought - why not make a Christmas Card!

This is only the second time that I've ever used Adobe Indesign. When I came across Adobe Indesign, I imagined it to be a complicated version of Microsoft Word.

So I avoided it like the plague.

Until now that is.

I never imagined I would finish the card in two days! I'm warming up to Indesign, and I think I'll be using a lot of it in the near future.

Indesign is used for making business cards, greeting cards, pamphlets, and books and....that's about it correct? (Let me know if there're more uses of Indesign!)

___

So this is just me testing the waters of Indesign - and, of course, how comfortable I am with it, by starting out with a lovely Christmas Card for ya'll!! :)

For anybody curious about the original card, you can find it in the tutorial page >>> How To Create A Festive Greeting Card in Adobe Indesign

The original card created by the author of the tutorial Grace Fussell had elements that needed to be purchased. I couldn't, so I substituted them with whatever free vectors I could find on Vecteezy.com's website.

It worked out pretty well I think.

I couldn't have done it any better. The card is simple yet looks colorful. Those were the key elements that attracted me to this tutorial.

Here is the front, back, and the insides!

Not bad huh... :P

Should I get it printed?

Who wants one? Let me know in the comments below!

And advanced Christmas and New Year wishes to ya'll! :) <3

I Tried Creating Vector Hair | Illustrator Adventures With Anu

Hello Lovelies!

I have some good news to share. Today I start on my new job as an online coding instructor for kids and teens. The past two weeks had been a whirlwind attending interviews, juggling phone calls and video calls, taking care of my home, dogs, my mom -  I've been on my toes all day every day of the week!

But, it's been worth it in the end.

And today is my first day at work (The best part is - I get to work from home; so, thank god, I don't have to sacrifice this blog! :P )

Alright!

Let's get to it, shall we? Where my girl at?

___

Ah! There she is!
Just look at her hair! She's a vision in...black hair. I wish my hair could flow in the wind like this.

This whole vector art took me about four hours to complete. That's it. Easy peazy, ain't it? That's because I followed a tutorial from my go-to website for illustrator tutorials - Tutplus!

Now it's time to find out how I managed to draw this gorgeous hair. I started at 10:30 in the night and completed at 2:30 in the wee hours of the morning. Why would I do that, right? :P

I was taken a back when I saw the end result. I learned quite a lot while attempting this tutorial.

One: I learned how to create brushes in Illustrator.
Two: I am confident about creating my own vector artworks in the future!

(My forte is drawing girls. At least that's what I think. And the confidence wasn't there before. So this tutorial definitely planted a seed inside me. An idea for a girl!) Where am I going with this? :D

Let's have a look at the process - my process -  of creating vector HAIRRRR!!!!.(The caps were unnecessary. I know.)

___

I started by creating the brushes for the hair as suggested by the tutorial.

At first, I didn't understand anything - as is the case every time I attempt to draw something I had never done before.

But then I got a hang of it. And I created the brushes and named them just the way the tutor had named them in the tutorial. (She didn't write them in some places, so I had to squint and read it in the snapshots!)

And also, I needed a head for the hair. (Obviously!)

So, this is what I came up with.

She's a beauty, ain't she?

The first step was drawing the hairline with the Hairline Brush.

And then, I suddenly felt the need to be crazy. So, I did this. :D

This is not part of the tutorial. But, if you would like a signed copy of this 'original' artwork, I'll send ya. Just make sure to hang it on the wall in front of your bed so that every morning you can greet her - or rather, she you.

Then, it was time for the Hair-piece Brush to do it's magic! I just created a couple of stray strokes on the art-board just to get comfortable using the brush. I didn't have to put in any effort at all. The brush did everything for me. Which was really awesome.

I gave a pat on my back for no reason and continued. But then I realized I didn't like the way the hair just stood there like spikes. So, I erased the strokes and started over.

And, honestly, when I curled the strokes a little, the hair looked like it had come alive out of nowhere. I felt like a hair-dresser who had done a really good job at blow drying the hair.

Next, it was time to exaggerate the movements of the individual strands of hair. For that, the tutorial suggested I use the Tapered Brush. And boy it enhanced the already good-looking hair.

I'm not sure if you can see them, but there are more strands flying in the wind in the above picture. To me it felt like she's in a photo-shoot or a hair commercial! *sends a flying kiss to my own drawing*

The next part was to draw the shine. Oooh! I loved doing this part. It definitely added some depth and gave texture to the hair. And shine!

The final element that I added was some extra shine using the tapered brush. I followed the tutorial to the T, and voila! It was finished!

Here are the different versions. I couldn't help clowning around with it.

I settled with the one below. ^_^

It was a pleasure drawing the vector hair.

The Mandala | Adobe Illustrator Adventures with Anu

It took me four days. My routine was the same for all of the days. Wake up. Walk the dogs. Have breakfast. And when the clock strikes ten, open Illustrator, and select a brush to help me draw the mandala.

I had saved dagubi's tutorial on 'How to Create a Lace Pattern in Adobe Illustrator,' to my Graphic Design Pet Projects Playlist on YouTube and it had already been around ten days since I had saved it.

It was time.

It was time for me to stop putting it away for another day and just watch it and... DO SOMETHING! Mostly because I needed to keep my promise to this blog.

For the uninitiated, this blog should have an article uploaded to it every Saturday. Period. No Excuses. That was the promise I made with this blog in my very first article.

Because: 1. I want to become an Illustrator. 2. I'm weird.

But, as is the case every time when I 'embark' on a new journey of some kind, things seldom go as planned. (I know some of you can relate to it.) And Blue Eye Candy is not an exception.

It's been almost a month since I rambled on something about being 'in love' with flat drawings. My future self always recoils when reading my blog posts. (Hey, future self!) Not a whole lot of you had read my previous article, so it was kind of relieving, to be honest. ('Hey' to those who write something but don't want to read it ever again. Or have it read by the whole wide world. Nobody? Okay.)

___

Thirty minutes is a REALLY long time to be squinting your eyes and watching a tutorial where the tutor is drawing intricate patterns - which, when you try to replicate, turns out looking nothing like it.

But I went through it. For four days. By the time I had completed it, my toenails had grown 2 inches longer and I had forgotten that I was suffocating my derriere.

And my mandala looked nothing like the one in the tutorial - which can sometimes be a good thing. I always try not to copy a tutorial from A to Z. Instead, I try to make it look different. On purpose. Sometimes it works. And sometimes, it doesn't.

This time around, while creating the mandala, it actually worked! Apart from a few errors here and there, that is. They weren't visible in the final piece, but, oh well, the truth is:

The more I tried fixing them, the more my mandala started skewing.

So I decided to just embrace all the errors and just...let them be. Because nothing in this world is perfect. So my mandala needn't be; it didn't have to try to become the mandala in the tutorial; it accepted the way it is. It was, for the very first time, happy to be himself. Imperfect and skewed.

Okay, I'll stop.

That was a weird monologue.

___

To those who managed to read all of the above: Congratulations! You get a free video tour of my mandala. Just scroll to the bottom.

To those who just couldn't get through the first few sentences: Congratulations! It' the best decision you've ever made in your life! And you, also, get a free video tour of my mandala!

Because my mandala needs attention. No matter who or what you are. :D

I know. None of you asked for any of this, but I just had to flaunt my mandala and do a video-shoot for it - I'm sorry - 'him.' We've been calling this guy 'it' all through this article. :O

'Dear Mandala, I give you life. From henceforth, you shall be called Mandy. Mandy the Mandala.'

___

Before this article gets any more weirder, let me just show the thing that you came here for. Let me present to you: The Birth of Mandy. In pictures.

This is how he looks today. He's four days old in this picture.
'Mandy The Mandala' in all his glory!

This is him when he was just a few hours old.
And the following are pictures of him when he was growing up inside my Adobe Illustrator. (I fed him lot of black and white goop!)

This is him at two days old. His hair started growing haphazardly. So I had to chop it! (He cried a lot that day.)

And as promised to all of you, here is a video of his video-shoot.

___

I hope you enjoyed this article. Share and comment if you liked this episode of 'Adobe Illustrator Adventures with Anu.'

Next time, I'll be doing something totally out of my comfort zone again. It will be yet another adventure that you wouldn't want to miss!

Let's all take one step closer to our dream by doing something that we love today.

Thanks for reading and Happy November! :)

I'm in Love With Drawing Flats

Yuhoo, I'm back after a two-week hiatus! It's 'cause I caught a mysterious virus (nobody knows the name of it). Made me SO sick that I couldn't move a muscle. But, thankfully, I'm all good now. And back to my business - which is (say it with me) 'to become a professional graphic designer!' Thanks :D

Should I write a poem about this? (Hehehe) If you didn't know, I write poems. And I sing them too. They look like ---> this (Hehehe)

___

I'd been tinkering around illustrator all weekend and it ended up being a very productive two days for me. There is something called 'flat designs' or '2D drawing' in illustrator and...

I love it! A lot!

How did I not know about this for two years? TWO YEARS!! *faints*

As some of you might know (When I say 'some of you,' It's actually only you Sharon. Hey there if you are reading this :P), I started learning Photoshop and Illustrator somewhere around 2017, then I dropped it somewhere in 2018, and now I've picked it up again.

This time I've decided to stick with it, with the whole learning process - even if it takes me tens of thousands of years to master it (hope not :P ), Imma just gonna stick with it. (While I type this, I can hear the song 'I'm a sucker for you...' playing in my head. That's crazy. What the heck...Hehehe)

___

One more thing: For now, I can't draw flats on my own - like from my imagination. But I'll get there. This is definitely a start for me. And people say that when you love something, it's going to come naturally to you - IF you stick to it that is.

Oh, wait. Did anyone actually say that? I think not. I just made that up. (Hehehe)

But it works ya'll. Just learn something with purpose and give it all your love and it's going to make you happy.

Okay, I'll stop with the bla-bla-ing. Let's get to the drawings!!!!!!

___

Numero Uno ---> Potted Plants, A Doggo, A Lamp, A Lone Cloud, And a Heart!

I started with simple shapes so that I get a hang of how flats are usually done by professional designers. YouTube was the place to go look for tutorials like always, and I found this really wonderful channel called Pixel and Bracket.

I have a special place for people from whom I got to learn a lot. (I started with 'Derrick Mitchell,' then I went to 'Yes I'm a Designer,' and now, I think I'm into 'Pixel and Bracket!' You should check them all out; they're the best!)

I'm always grateful for such tutors who teach for free. And, personally, I do a lot better learning at my own pace than following a strict curriculum. Although many suggest that going to a design school is beneficial if you want to make a career out of it. Which is probably true.

Well, since that's not an option for me, I go around scouring for tutorials on YouTube and Udemy. And it works pretty well most of the time for me. Until I can afford going back to school, Imma just gonna go the self-learning route. (Hehehe)

Pretty awesome, right?

I always thought that I was no good in Illustrator because I can't draw vector art. But there's a lot more possible with Illustrator - which I realized only now.

I'm happy with these 'cartoon-like' drawings. They're cute.

My plan is to bring these individual elements together and create something interesting. Like some scenery or even a greeting card.

So next week, I hope you'll get to see that. All I need to do is learn some good typography techniques if I want to make a good greeting card. This will be my assignment for this week!

Alright, lemme show you some more. Keep scrolling!! (Hehehe)

___

#2: A House

The next flat design I attempted was a HUGE one for me. I ended up watching a simple flat design house tutorial and I wanted to copy it.

One crucial thing that I learned as a beginner in Graphic Design is that - you learn a lot by copying the pros. Once you get comfortable with all the techniques, that's when you are ready to create something on your own. This was a revelation to me. I had learned this from someone, but I just can't recall the name. Thanks to him or her whoever it is. ^^

If you would like to see the original tutorial of the house, head over to the channel 'How To Graphic Design' on YouTube. It wasn't easy to follow, but I ended up with the one you see below. Apart from some minor errors here and there (can you spot them? Hehehe), I would say - the house turned out pretty good.

I just added some extra clouds and some extra shadows and the chimney smoke. (Sometimes copying makes me feel badddd, so I end up adding something extra in the final piece to make myself feel less bad I guess. There I said it. Hehehe)

Looks like a nice comfy little house tucked away in some remote place, doesn't it? (That's also the description of my present house. Just remove the 'comfy' part and magnify the 'remote' part. Hehehe)

If you go to this tutorial's YouTube channel, you'll find a tutorial for drawing a 'Pizza Shop'. I'll take that as my next assignment.

(I have a suggestion: It would be nice if someone could drop a comment as to what I should draw next. Like a challenge. Hehehe)

Right now, the goal is to take up as many 'self-projects' as I can.

Maybe, if things go well, I'll be able to start creating whole cities after a couple of months. That would be great.

Alright. Let's keep going. I've got more.

___

#2: A Car

There was a quick 2-minute tutorial of a jeep/car that I thought to try on a whim - simply because I wanted my flat design house to have a car parked in front of it.

I wanted something like a sedan, but unfortunately, I couldn't find a tutorial for that. So I had to settle with the jeep. But it turned out pretty good. I'm satisfied. It actually suits me well. Beep-beep! (Hehehe)

Again, I gave it a personal touch by adding a gradient background. (I know. It isn't much. You can eye-roll if you want to. Hehehe) It isn't there in the original tutorial, so...

I think everybody should include something that is their own when copying stuff from tutorials. It kinda feels good. Maybe a dot here, a bird there, an extra tree somewhere, ....there are endless possibilities.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention. The tutorial is by 'Monkey's Dream' They've got some really cool flat designs on their channel. Since Christmas is just around the corner, they've got a bunch of Christmas-related falt designs like Snowman, elf, bells, lights, etc.

Yup, you guessed it! Imma gonna try these babies. And prolly I'll send them out as greeting cards to you guys for Christmas. *wink* (Hehehe)

Alright. I've saved the best for the last. The next flat design is my fave. I LOVED creating it - simply because I managed to make it my own by watching the tutorial.

Let's get to it, shall we?

____

#4: A Girl!

Some of you who know me personally know that I'm a big fan of drawing girls.

The story goes like this: One day, when I was around ten years old, my sister showed me how to draw the face of a girl. She was only twelve years old at the time. I was so amazed by her drawing that I dedicated my free hours to drawing hundreds of girls. (I have a whole stack of diaries dedicated to them). Every evening after school, I would get down to work to create the best girl I could. Good ol' times.

I created a flat design girl by watching the tutorial by the YouTuber - 'Digital Art Creation.'
(You can check out the full tutorial here----> How to draw simple flat design characters)

This guy is so good at what he does. His channel has some amazing flat designs with so much detail. I was mind blown, ya'll. He is THAT good.

So, coming to the flat girl I made.

Though I loved his office-style flat characters, I wanted to incorporate my own thing. Since I have my own style for drawing girls on paper, I decided to go along that route.

I usually like my girls to look more anime-style, but that is not how the final drawing turned out to be. I wish. (Hehehe)

She turned out to be more of a cute girl type. There might be some proportion-related issues or even anatomy-related issues, but, heck, I excuse myself for those. As time goes by, they'll probably get corrected on their own. For now, I love what she looks like! (Hehehe)

Here is a 'close-up' version. I want to show you her teeth. (Hehehe)

What do you think? Did she turn out all right?

My long term goal is to draw vector art. Let's see if I can vectorize her in the future. That will be interesting, wouldn't it? A 3D version of her would be a dream come true. *wink* I can feel myself getting excited just thinking about it. But I'll have to wait for it.

Learning anything new is a marathon. And I'm still running. What about you?

Have a swell week, ya'll! And thanks for stopping by! 💮

Photoshopping My Face Five Different Ways

I have been giving love only to Photoshop for the past few weeks while Illustrator has taken the back seat. Next week, let me bring you something using Illustrator.

But for now, I want to show you what Photoshop and I did together for the past two days. (We stared into each other's eyes until my eyes dried out, but that's not the point here XD)

I played around with my own face and the end results were...pretty good. (I'm no expert, but my beginner's eyes were fascinated by the results!)

I used a close-up pic of my face with a crocheted cap (made by my mum). It's the only decent photo I could find of myself on my C drive. The only other option was a passport size photo where I just stare into oblivion in a black dress.

So, the obvious choice was this one with the cap.

I did something to my face in photoshop
Well...

Let's start with the one that didn't turn out quite the way I expected it to.

1) Transforming My Face Into A Digital Painting

I referred to this tutorial to create a digital painting effect.

And this is how it turned out.

Digital Painting Effect

I know.

It doesn't look good.

At all.

Something's off. But, boy did the face of Taylor Swift in the tutorial look amazing. Unfortunately, I couldn't achieve the same results. Maybe it's my face, or the lighting, or both. Perhaps I'll try again next time with a different photo.

Let's move on to the next one.

2) Cartooning My Face

The next tutorial that I happened to chance upon was this one.

The tutorial said that it's an easy way to give one's photos a cartoon effect. But, I struggled anyway.

I passed my photo through Photoshop's 'adjustment layers,' and 'filter gallery.' And I did the outlines using the pen tool as suggested in the tutorial.

This is how it turned out.

Cartoon Effect
What do you think? Does it look...frightening?

It actually does to me. XD

Moving on to the next one...

3) The Watercolor Effect

This tutorial was an interesting one to attempt, but I just couldn't figure out if I liked the end result or not.

It isn't that bad, but my inner critic kept telling me that it looks terrible! I kinda like it though. But would I try it again? Maybe....maybe not....I really don't know...

Perhaps a little tweak here and there would have done justice to this effect. What d'ya say?

Watercolor Effect

The next one is probably the one I liked the most out of this bunch.

Shall we have a look at it?

4) Creating a Pencil Sketch Effect!

I started out with traditional drawing during my initial years. I would just sit and draw in a corner with a pencil and paper.

So, being able to get the same black and white effect on my photo using Photoshop's filters was AMAZINGGG!!! :D

I could never draw like this on paper in a million years. And that's why I'm really thankful for this tutorial.

Pencil Sketch Effect

I'll definitely try this one on a couple of my future photos. If I take one that is in the next few months. :D

Let's look at the final one.

5) Using Camera Raw Filter and Adjustment Curves

So, the last one is simply a technique for enhancing photos that I learned in this tutorial. My face definitely looks a lot more lively here compared to the original photo.

I might actually use this technique for all of my future profile photos. ^_^

Enhanced Photo using Camera Raw Filter & Curves

That's about it for this post.

Next time, I'll bring you something from Illustrator. Should I try this one?

---

Hope you enjoyed this trip looking at my potato face. :D Which one did you like? Comment below!

Byeee!

I am potato's doppelganger

I Made A Book Cover For A Thriller Story I Wrote

I love a good thriller, and when I saw the author for this month for the TOIWriteIndia contest had given a prompt where we had to come up with a story of a thriller genre, I was super excited.

I was skeptical at first about my 'ability' to write thrilling stories, but my brain managed to hatch something in the end. And voila, I had written my very first crime story. (Well...sorta :P )

Image result for happy gifs anime

I also had a little celebration in my head for finishing it a day before the last day - which is tomorrow. Because that's never happened before. I'm very bad at keeping up with deadlines.

I can't reveal the story to you as per the rules of the competition, but I did manage to make a cover for the story in Photoshop. It's not a requirement but, I just thought I would do something extra. For fun. (My brain: I see what you did there. You want the author to notice you. You cheeky monkey!)

Of course, where would I be without all the tutorials to teach me how to do stuff. :D

I found an interesting tutorial on YouTube titled 'How to make a scary wall scrawled with blood.' And, since my storyline had a killer in it, I thought why not go the gory route for the cover.

Well, I'm pretty satisfied with the way it turned out (for a first book cover), and here it is for you to judge. What do you think? Would you be like -

'Hm..I wanna see what's inside.'

(or)

'Meh, this looks cheesy as F*'

Comment and let me know. :)

If you've reached here, thanks for reading, mate. And I hope you have a great day ahead.

P.S. Been watching a lot of Australia's Got Talent on YouTube. You can notice the influence it's had on me here. 'Mate' here strictly means 'friend' ya'll! :D I googled it just to be sure I was using it appropriately in my blog post, but google disappointed me with its first result. Hence this little explanation towards the end. Wasn't necessary but, ......... whatever. Here's a candy 🍬

I Tried Creating a LOGO For My Blog (And Went Insane)

Hello, lovelies! I almost thought I had given up on this blog. Reason: My baby dog had a surgery and I ended up bawling all day for 3 days. It was the saddest moment of my life.

He's okay now, so I decided to get back to business - which is to become a professional graphic designer... or illustrator or... whatever I end up becoming towards the end. Who knows, I might surprise myself by becoming a sand artist instead. Nah, I'm kidding. They aren't even related. :P

I'm just tryin' to enjoy the process whatever the end result might be. And, most of all, I'm just tryin' to stick to the rhythm of doing at least one project every week!

Comment below if you think it's important to pursue our full potential or as this quote goes:

"I once heard the definition of hell: On the last day on earth, the person you became will meet the person you could have become" - anonymous

That's powerful, isn't it? With this thought for you to ponder about, let me show you what's been cookin' in my adobe illustrator!

---

I wanted to create a logo for this blog. So I dived right into my illustrator thinkin' -

'Ha! This won't take much time at all!'
'Logos are easy peasy lemon squeezy!'
'I'm fairly good at drawing, so this must be right up my alley!'

Well, I was wrong.

By the time I finished my half-baked logos, an entire day had passed. And I became aware of the fact of just how difficult creating logos can be!!!

---

I started with an eye. (tutorial link)

Then, I created some candies. (candy tutorial link , spiral tutorial link)

Then, I looked for inspiration in logopond.com. I then tried to think of something to incorporate the 'blue' part of my blog's name into my logo but ended up with a blue circle and a square. (I guess you could call that a creative fart? *hehehe*)

Then I created a circular text. (tutorial link)

So far, the components of my logo consisted of  an eye, two candies, a blue circle & a square, and a circular text. These were simple shapes and I had to come up with something interesting and unique so that, when I brought them together, the end result didn't end up looking like a kid's drawing. (Later I gave up on that and...let the logo be whatever it wanted to be.)

Logos are supposed to be the heart of a brand (I learned that I think - if my memory serves me right), so I really wanted it to look fancy and good and striking!

But then...

This happened.

I almost felt betrayed by my right brain.

That's why it's important, people, to not have really high expectations when you are starting out so that you don't end up giving up when things go south!

It's always easy to have a mindset where you prepare ahead of time for the worst-case scenario. (This advice is for me. And for my future logo endeavours.)

---

Disappointed with my first attempt, I started again with a blank sheet in illustrator and went through a couple more of youtube tutorials.

Aaaand...

Here they are. I couldn't even differentiate the good from the bad at this point. I had gone completely bonkers and was just clicking, dragging, moving, merging stuff, applying effects...

I finally settled on the one you see above. (blue crystal tutorial)

It was an insane ride, but I learned a lot in the 8 hours that I spent doing these 'logos.' It isn't perfect and I wish it were better, but I'm in this for the long haul...so, imma keep goin'

Have a good day ya'll! ^_^

And thanks for reading.

Byeee!!!!!!
